Johnny Horton – Battle of New Orleans

Johnny Horton, country singer, had a #1 Billboard hit in 1959, with this Grammy-winning song, written by Jimmy Driftwood, a teacher. Given that at this time, Elvis Presley was a chart topper, a song about the final battle of the War of 1812 seems out of the ordinary. However, “saga songs” were popular, too (The Kingston Trio’s Tom Dooley: #1 the year prior). And perhaps those taking time out from ogling Paul Anka and Bobby Darin learned something about the defeat of British forces by Andrew Jackson, through this tune.
