Randy Newman – Political Science

Today, most people know Randy Newman for his theme songs in various Pixar films. In 1972, his Sail Away album included a song that appears to be critical of U.S. foreign policy at the time.

The song’s narrator wonders why if America does so much to “help” the rest of the world’s countries, these places are often ungrateful (President George W. Bush might think this prescient given Iraq today). So, a response could be to “drop the big one” (a nuclear bomb)  to make the world more like the U.S.A.

Globalization is thus today still often maligned as being “Americanization.”

It’s often hard to tell with Randy Newman songs if he believes the satire…
