Bruce Springsteen – Dancing in the Dark

The upbeat dance tempo belies some depressing lyrics in this 1984 hit for Bruce Springsteen, from his most celebrated Born in the U.S.A album. Lyrics about being tired, getting older and getting nowhere seem like a strange choice for the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party to have used as their campaign song in 1985 (never mind it being a Canadian provincial party using a quintessential American songwriter).

The party (with leader Frank Miller) won the most seats, but not more than the other parties combined. Thus, after more than four decades of rule, the provincial Liberal Party, under leader David Peterson, and with the support of Bob Rae’s New Democratic Party, formed the government.
