Re-Flex – The Politics of Dancing

British new wavers Re-Flex never cracked the U.S. top 20, but this 1983 tune was their biggest (and only?) hit.

The lyrics suggest dancing is infectious and pure, a message that should spread and be understood; that feeling good is important, and we should dance to share this belief.

Of course, dancing has always been very political, whether that is the shift in the 1950s to dancing alone (the Twist, for instance, didn’t require touching a partner), to the 1980s with ‘Dirty Dancing’ to today with sexually-charged ‘booty shaking.’ Dance is used to help describe adjusting gender roles, feminism and sexuality… and more.
