Donna Summer – She Works Hard for the Money

Donna Summer, who died today (Rest in Peace), found Grammy success for her disco and rock songs in the 1970s, that suggested female empowerment (“Hot Stuff”) and tackled unique subjects for the genre (“Bad Girls,” referencing prostitution). Her 1983 hit, “She Works Hard for the Money,” co-written by Summer, has been interpreted as being about a prostitute, but was inspired by an encounter with a female bathroom attendant. The message, that women working need respect, is a characteristically feminist (but really, common sense) message from the vocalist. The song came at a time when more women were in the work force, and not necessarily in positions of power and influence.
