Japanese singer Kyu Sakamoto hit #1 in America, in 1963, with this song about a man looking up when walking to keep the tears from falling. As a child in 1944, he had to flee Tokyo during American air raids. He tragically died in 1985, in the crash of Japan Airlines Flight 123, which has been cited as the deadliest single-aircraft accident in history (520 deaths and only four survivors). The song is properly titled “Ue o Muite Arukō” and remains among the few top hits performed in a foreign-language.
