Queen – I Want To Break Free

Men in drag in a video parodying a British soap opera, Coronation Street, was alarming enough to MTV back in 1984 to not show it. Most Queen songs are now interpreted to be about singer Freddie Mercury’s homosexuality and death from AIDS. But this tune was written by bassist John Deacon.

It’s probably just about personal relationships, but has been considered in places such as South Africa to represent an anthem opposing oppression.
