North Korean dictator Kim Jong-il sings a sound-alike of this song in the film, Team America: World Police. But it was about soldiers in war missing home. Bobby Vinton served in the army as a chaplain’s assistant when he wrote this tune in the 1950s. It was released in 1962, but gained traction later as the war in Vietnam escalated. As this conflict is widely seen as the first to be televised, there is an incongruity with soldiers being shown on the nightly news, while lacking an adequate, desired ability to communicate themselves, with those they care about. One wonders if a family member ever saw a brother or son on television, as the only point of contact. Hopefully they enjoyed a reunion.
