A-Mei – Ting Hai

Political conflicts creep into the music and entertainment world.

A-Mei is a diva of Mandarin pop, in the Celine Dion vein. She is also born in Taiwan, an island “country” not recognized as independent by the Chinese government since it split back in the days of Chairman Mao. At any given time, China has a thousand or so missiles pointed across the Formosa Strait.

The singer was banned from mainland China back in 2000, when, despite being Taiwanese she performed the Chinese national anthem at the inauguration of a Taiwan president seen as anti-China, Chen Shui-bian.

Cui Jian is another Asian pop star reviewed here. Jon Bon Jovi sings in Mandarin, too.
