MTV used the opening of this 1986 song as a lead-in, and it has been in a few video game soundtracks. Writer Dave Mustaine has said the song is supposed to debunk myths about head bangers (that they are not monolithically anti-government, atheist and unmotivated).
The chorus of “Peace sells, but who’s buying?” punctuates verses critical of unnamed political positions against the status quo. The narrator would love to see a better political system, but accepts the present one for now – he goes to court, pays his bills, gets to work on time, and even respects the Constitution by citing the “We the people” preamble. Further, he demands evidence that system changes will actually bring the benefits they promise – good intentions are not enough.
