Chick rocker Pat Benatar had her first top ten hit with this song in 1979. It’s been done by Glee and in video games, but also may help politicians prepare for leader and all-candidate’s debates.
The aim is to deliver a knock out rhetorical blow to one’s opponents, for all to see live… with the hope that such a sound bite will win voter support. Fire away:
In 1984, Ronald Reagan was being attacked for his age, and responded, ““I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent’s youth and inexperience.” BAM!
Yet words may not matter as much as image, as when John F. Kennedy looked so much more telegenic than Richard Nixon, sweating and needing a shave, debating way back in 1960. Kennedy won the debate and the presidency. BAM!
Politicians, especially political party leaders, rehearse extensively for their debates. It is even common for their handlers to hire actors resembling their opponents, to conduct mock exercises. These would be so fascinating to see.
