Bruce Cockburn – If I Had A Rocket Launcher

Canadians are familiar with folkie Bruce Cockburn’s left wing politics, stridently expressed here following some fact-finding trips he took to Mexico and Central America.

The lyrics from 1984 review some terrible impacts of wars, and in anger, the singer imagines fighting back, even launching a missile back at the aggressors to kill them.

Of course, it’s boilerplate ethics to argue that two wrongs don’t make a right. And perhaps hypocritical given the singer is also a Christian. Maybe the song is more about venting than action.

Incidentally, Cockburn’s brother, an ER doctor, has served in Afghanistan.
