Toni Fisher – West Of The Wall

West of the wall, where hearts are free…

sang Toni Fisher in 1962, about lovers separated by the Berlin Wall which divided East and West Germany from 1961-1989. East Germany erected the barrier under the guise of keeping western influences out, in the name of building a socialist state.  The divide came to symbolize stark differences in outputs for different political systems – the heavy handed and autocratic East and the freedom-loving West.

Elton John’s Nikita (also reviewed here) is a song with a similar story.
