Former Genesis frontman sings in 1980 about anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko. Biko had died in prison in South Africa following injuries from interrogation.
Apartheid began in 1948. The term means “aparthood” (if that is a word), and refers to official racial segregation (and by extension, white South African rule). It got right down to black South Africans not even being citizens in the country of their birth. And not having political representation to try to effect democratic change.
Apartheid is considered to be officially ended with the 1994 election of President Nelson Mandela, whom Simple Minds sang a song about, also reviewed here.
