No one knows what goes on behind closed doors, sang Charlie Rich in 1973. He was singing about sex. But the term “behind closed doors” is a political cliché, too, referring to government making decisions in a less than transparent manner. Sometimes, closed meetings can allow for frank discussion, however. Thus just as we would not wish to catch Charlie Rich in flagrante delicto with his sweetheart, should the public be privy to every single second of the itineraries of their elected representatives?
