The composer is Jack Norworth (1879-1959) with Albert von Tilzer (1878-1956). Their 1908 chorus of this tin pan alley effort is known by most everyone. The song is about more than just the seventh inning stretch, but for reflecting Americana in as popular a fashion as the Star Spangled Banner. Take Me Out To The Ballgame is an aural explanation, then, of what the USA is all about. Or supposed to be about. And even, thinking of the expansion of American popular culture to the world, of what the USA should not be about – inflicting its values everywhere else. But at the end of the day, perhaps it shouldn’t always be about politics, but baseball only – the national pastime?
