These new wavers led by Tom Robinson came up with this tune, for a gay pride parade in London, back in 1976. It was released by the band on vinyl, two years later. The lyrics take on British societal attitudes to gays, and over time, the lyrics have been adjusted to address other gay-related causes.
Robinson was always “out” about his sexuality, unlike more contemporary performers that may even appear to milk and fuel speculation about their sexual orientation for publicity. Then again, it might have been hard to play it coy with a song of this title!
