Butthole Surfers – Jet Fighter

When you’ve named your band Butthole Surfers, you’re probably not thinking about making serious music. This 2001 song seems to be about a boy who always loved planes, grows up to fly them, and is shot down in the Middle East by a surface to air missile. He meets John Wayne (symbol of the American way), in heaven. But for some reason, The Duke and Jesus send him to hell upon Allah’s command.

So maybe the tune is a clumsy commentary on American involvement in this part of the world, how it’s a fool’s errand to intervene there, to spread liberal democracy.

A related song reviewed here is Sky Pilot, by Eric Burdon and the Animals.

  1. Actually the end is Jesus interrupts Mikey (in heaven) while meeting John Wayne, takes them before Allah who sends them both (Mikey and J.W.) to Hell. Mikey seems to be a recurring character with the Surfers.

The 1983 US Embassy bombing was a pretty major event, and the Surfers would have been facepainting each other with LSD by then. US turned around and bombed Beirut in response (I think the only time we’ve ever bombed Beirut, at least up to 2001 when the song came out), but eventually ended up running home to momma. This would have been the Reagan era, and BHS stemming from Texas probably doesn’t mind crapping on the southern trinity (Bible, Reagan, and John Wayne), ergo Allah being the one to throw Mikey and Wayne in Hell.

    Not clumsy at all.
