Eugène Pottier – The Internationale

This is the final struggle
Let us group together and tomorrow
The Internationale will be the human race.

This is a famous “left wing” protest song going back to the 1870s. It comes from time of the socialist Paris Commune, which governed Paris for a very short time, but did not survive a French government crackdown. This song remains as a tribute to the Paris Commune supporters, who supported equal rights for woman and workers. “Internationale” refers to the collection of political parties behind it all.

It also became the first anthem of the Soviet Union. It has been translated into many languages to generally hail socialism and labour and women’s issues and struggles.
