Neil Young – Campaigner

The line, “Even Richard Nixon has got soul,” referring to the 37th president of the USA, is a haunting lyric!

The meaning of the overall song is disputed. Perhaps the narrator, a “lonely visitor,” finds a utopian world, however unattainable, where Nixon is a good guy — such as not escalating the Vietnam War, and not resigning over the Watergate scandal. Nixon would appear to be the most hated president by many, at least perhaps, until George W. Bush?

Yet, the challenge of assessing presidents is that they do many things in many areas. It would be interesting to know if Neil Young (Canadian by birth), was pleased that Nixon also ended American involvement in Vietnam, for instance.
